Five participants at the W.H.E.N.  Science and Engineering Fair advanced to the Central Utah STEM Fair (CUSEF) this year, and 3 of them won a total of 7 awards!
Ella Madsen, a homeschooled 10th grader with a science project titled “Optimal Design of a Reflector to Increase PhotoVoltaic Panel Output” won several awards!
  • The special NASA Earth System Science Award
  • 1st place in the Energy: Chemical & Physical category
  • The grand award of becoming an Intel ISEF Finalist! This means (if it wasn’t for COVID19) she would be one of only 4 students going on an all-expense paid trip to the International Science & Engineering Fair in Anaheim, California!
This is very exciting and will be a wonderful thing for Ella to include on her CV for the rest of her life.
Zoe Erickson, a homeschooled 7th grader with a science project titled “Essentially Safe Chemical Warfare Agent Simulants” also won several awards:
  • 1st place in the Chemistry category
  • The grand award of being invited to compete in the Broadcom MASTERS Competition, which is the equivalent of ISEF for the 6th-8thgraders. The winners will get an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the finals competition.
  • -Junior Division Grand Champion (a.k.a. “Best in Show”)
Aimee Hales, a homeschooled 9th grader with an engineering project titled “Cooking Without Fuel: Utilizing the Sun to Save Money, Energy, and Lives” won:
