Spelling Bee FAQs
Q. Which lists should my child study to prepare for the spelling bee?
A. The study lists this year are not as clearly defined as in past years. If you have access to the Words of
Champions list, and you have a child in 1 st or 2 nd grade, you will want to study the words on the page ONE
BEE School Spelling Bee List. If you have the words only list, 1-2 graders should focus on studying words
punting through stray.
3 rd and 4 th graders should focus on studying the words found under TWO BEE School Spelling Bee List or the
words gallop through station;
and 5 th through 8 th graders should focus on studying words found under THREE BEE School Spelling Bee List
or words from lacrosse through misdemeanor.
Note: This does not mean that these are the only words your child could encounter. For example, if the 1-2
grade group exhausts the words on the ONE BEE list, they will be given words from the TWO BEE School
Spelling Bee List. If grades 3-4 exhaust their list, they will be given words from the THREE BEE School
Spelling Bee List. In the event that grades 5-8 exhaust their list of words, they will be given words from
Merriam-Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary. There are not study lists for the additional words for grades 5-8.
Q. Will the words at the Spelling Bee be given in order of the study list?
A. No. The words will be in random order.
Q. What do we do on the day of the Spelling Bee (February 6)?
A. Please arrive at least 15-20 minutes early (5:40-5:45pm) so that your child(ren) can check-in at the check-in
table. Enter in through the main doors under the word FAITH and there will be signs directing you to the check-
in table. After you check-in, you will be directed to the room where your child(ren) will compete. Your
child(ren) will be shown where to sit near the front of the room and you may take a seat in the seats reserved
for spectators.
Q. How long do you anticipate the Bee to last?
A. The length of the Bee will vary depending on how competitive the spellers are. Typically, the bees last
between 45-60 minutes. The Junior A Bee and the Junior B Bee will occur in the same room sequentially so you
may have to wait for the Junior A Bee to finish before your child competes in the Junior B Bee. The Junior A Bee
usually goes pretty fast so don’t fret too much about that.
Q. Can I bring food to eat or my other children to eat or drink beverages during the bee?
A. The short answer is no. Because we are borrowing the space from American Heritage Schools, they have
requested that we not eat in any of the rooms. If you need to feed your children or yourself, please eat in the
halls and try to be as clean as possible. You may have water (but no other beverages) in the rooms where the
bees will be held.
